A dense carpet in various green nuances and shapes fill the picture plane. Astrup has used different shades of green to capture the instant the rain has stopped. The sun shines on some of the leaves, but we can still almost smell the wet grass and hear the raindrops rustling in the treetops. To the right we can see a white stair railing. The stairs lead up to the parsonage’s “Corner Cabin”, but it has not been included in the picture, so that the stairs appear to lead into nowhere. Although the motif is painted in a realistic and life-like manner, the peculiar composition brings a mystical quality to this ordinary moment, where the garden is depicted like a closed-in space.

Rainy Atmosphere beneath the Trees at Jølster Parsonage depicts the allée and garden by the old parsonage at Ålhus in Jølster. This is one of the window motifs that Astrup lists in his notebook Blandede motiver (Miscellaneous Motifs) from 1898–1901, which was a series of motifs that could be painted from windows, peepholes or doors in the parsonage when it rained. Here the artist has seen the motif from the loft window in “Dagligstuen” (the “Day Cabin”). This was the old parsonage building that was demolished in 1907. The view is cropped to form a dramatic composition. The garden, with its little stone table, is seen from a bird’s eye view, while the stairs with the white railing – which leads into “Hjørnestuen” (the “Corner Cabin”) nearby, is cut out of the composition. The high vantage point also causes the wet treetops, heavy with rain, to appear like a green wall.

Here Astrup has depicted the nature of Western Norway through a modernist lens. The bird’s eye view and the unconventional section bring to mind the French artist Gustave Caillebotte. In his paintings from the 1880s we look down onto the street level and teeming street life from a balcony or a window. This was an unusual and absurd angle in a painting tradition, and was considered as a forerunner of the New Vision photographers Alexander Rodchencko, André Kertesz and Làszlo Moholy-Nagy from the 1920s. Interestingly, there are similar bird’s eye view perspectives among Astrup’s photographs.
