Twilight is moving in over Sandalen, creating dark shadows between the houses and the mountains. The people of Jølster have finished harvesting the grain, and the grain poles are left standing alone in the field. In the mystical evening light they have come to life, and it is as though the strange creatures have begun to amble across the valley. This painting is one of two rather similar pictures that Astrup made of the swaying grain poles. About this version he wrote: “… this picture was not finished, yet Mrs Kramer asked me so fervently “not to do anything more with it”. So I gave it to her as it was then. But I have heard people say, that it resembles a flock of “seamen in oilskins” walking across the field.
