Grain Poles were a common sight in Jølster during Astrup’s lifetime. The grain was cut and bound into sheaves, and then stacked on tall poles to dry. In the absence of humans, the grain poles came to life, and the strange creatures ambled across the valley. This painting is one of two rather similar pictures that Astrup made of the swaying grain poles. In this version they are made to resemble human beings via small, humoristic details. The grain pole at the right has been equipped with eyes, while another one walks with a cane.
