In the darkness of night details of the landscape have been erased, and the shapes have converged into large flat surfaces. The big ash tree in the personage garden is positioned at the centre of the picture, and its foliage dominates nearly the entire picture plane. There is something ornamental about the shapes in the tree, which is dramatically delineated against the sky and the white rectory. “The large ash” is mentioned in several of Astrup’s notes, and is also used in other nocturnal and twilight pictures from Ålhus.
