From Sunde

The landscape depicted here is from Sunde where Engel Astrup grew up. We can find the same landscape in Kari – Motif from Sunde (ca. 1918), with the pointed mountain peak Grovanipa and the orange house on the right. The mountain at the left of the painting is the same as in Barren Mountain (1906), with the characteristic “cleave” that divides the peak in two. The colours are subdued and transparent, and the structure of the canvas is visible through the paint. The picture has an atmospheric and steamy feel to it, capturing the mood immediately before, or after, a heavy rain shower.
