In this painting the lush Jølster landscape is depicted at its most picturesque. It is a warm early summer day, and the yellow marigolds spread like a carpet in the foreground. The young girl in the red dress is weaving a garland of flowers, with her bare feet dangling in mid-air. Her name is Kari, the first-born child of Nikolai and Engel Astrup. In the background, the mountains rise steeply above the inland fjord. The motif is from Sunde, where Engel Astrup grew up. The mountain we see on the far left is Kleivefjellet, which we can recognise from the painting Barren Mountain.
