North of Jølstravatnet is a mountain range which throughout the winter months changes both character and name. Enveloped in snow, the mountains resemble a reclining female nude: proceeding from the left, we see the bent knees, the abdomen and the breasts, while the head has disappeared behind the mountain at the right. In this representation we can also see that the snow which has settled downward into the valley, has become an arm resting on the mountainside. The local nickname for these mountains is ‘the Ice Queen’, and she appears in several of Astrup’s motifs. Sometimes, as here, she is the main subject, and impossible to overlook. At other times, she merges with the landscape.
