A solitary little bird stands on a stone at the water’s edge. It is early spring. The ice on the lake has melted, and the bare trees in the foreground have sprouted catkins and pussy willows, but the cold snow still covers the mountains. The vibrant orange tree stumps in the foreground are in stark contrast to the cool blue tones. Astrup has used the colours and the Japanese-inspired composition to create a clear and transparent atmosphere, in which the mountains in the background are just as sharply delineated as the twigs in the foreground. All of these elements contribute to framing the little bird on the stone, which appears to be at the centre of the world.
