In this humorous painting, a suitor has mustered up his courage with the assistance of a bottle of “Fuselfri B. Bergen” that costs 20 øre. The young sweethearts are kissing in the cowshed, where they believe they are alone – unaware of the spectator in the loft, who peers down at them. The cattle, on the other hand, are indifferent to what is going on. The light from the hatch in the wall creates a pattern in the cow dung on the floor, which resemble rock carvings. This painting is one of Astrup’s rare genre scenes. The clandestine kiss in a secluded corner has romantic overtones. At the same time the scene is caricatured and comical, as underscored by the surroundings and details.
