In this painting from Ålhus we see the church where Christian Astrup, Nikolai Astrup’s father, took over the office of parish priest in 1883. The family moved into the rectory (at the left edge of the picture). As in many of Astrup’s pictures, we can sense the swift changes in weather conditions typical of West Norway. It is overcast, but the mountain in the distance is illuminated, and a strip of sun falls on the south side of Jølstravatnet. The church and the rectory also seem to glow, in a shade of white that stands out from the green and brown tones of the landscape. White house paint was an exclusive colour that very few could afford. Churches, rectories and other civil servant residences often had whitewashed walls, a detail that demonstrated their special status.
