Kjære Kramer! Sandalstrand 14de sept. 1921

engang faar anledning at staa fadder hos Dere ogsaa.

vilde ingen af de to tingere have nogen af kalvene;

En af tingerne (Johannes i Midttùnet) kom ind for at se dem,

men han havde nettop faaet en kalv selv. – elles vilde

pene kalver.

– Ja nù begynder trærne at

os alle her på Stranden.

pilen lige i roden – her blev saa "bart". Med bedste hilsen din hengivne

Astrup

paa kjökkengùlvet, – men Fluge tör

kridt paa butikkerne her, men kitt

finere kridt. Kan dù skaffe mig fra

farvehandelen et stof som kaldes

caisein (½ kg.)? samt et lidet glas

copaivabalsam (100 gr.) og et glas lavendel-

olje og et glas concentreret amonjak (100 gr.).

Kùnde dù ogsaa skaffe mig lidt glycerin-

og ½ kg zinkhvidt (fersk)

Kari fortæller at sölvteskeen, som

dere havde lagt igjen, ikke kom frem

med pakken, som vi sendte; – den

blev lagt ind Sofias forklæde, –

kanske dere har fùndet den nù?

Træffer dù Thunold, maa dù hilse

ham med tak for brevet, – han

skriver aldrig adresse, – saa det er vanske-

ligt at svare ham. – Engel skylder ham

en flaske kognak fra forbùdets förste tid.

den maa vi pröve at skaffe ham.

Lev da vel og bedste hilsen til

Revold hvis han er i Bergen Din

Dear Kramer! Sandalstrand 14th Sept. 1921

Well it has taken a while before Engel and I write

to thank you for the magnificent present that You have

sent to little Eva, – [it] is too kind for words

– both the silver spoon and silver fork. – Well many thanks

to you – both you and your wife – hope Engel and I

will have the opportunity one day to be godparents for Your children as well.

How are things progressing with “the lot”? Has your seller (N. Haugen)

got in touch, – he has not been here, – he had

reserved the calf that our cow was expecting, – someone else had

also reserved it – and our cow had two calves at once, –

big handsome calves, – but since there were twin calves

neither of the two reservers wanted to have either of the calves;

One of the reservers (Johannes from Midttùnet) came by to look at them,

but he had just got a calf himself. – otherwise he

would have liked one of them, – as he thought they were exceptionally

handsome calves. – N. Haugen on the other hand has not been here,

since we talked about the lot, – but he has sent a

message, saying that he does not want it (the calf); – I don’t know, whether

this should be interpreted as an affront, – that he perhaps

believes – or thinks, – that I have persuaded you to haggle for a lower

price on the lot, – enough about that; – I don’t think, that you

should add anything significant to the price at this time – I have

been and still am so terribly tormented by the asthma, that I never

get to go anywhere, – otherwise I would pay a visit

to N. Haùgen and reconnoitre or investigate the terrain, – so

that I might find out, – whether he wants to sell or not, –

if it turns out: that he will not allow his brother to have the inner tract

(of the lot that is), then it is reasonable, that he won’t reduce the price one

öre, – since he has obviously set the price as high, as he

thinks necessary to make it unsellable, – so that he can keep it himself, but

I think this is unlikely, – it doesn’t fit with his

remark about how his brother (Anders) now has the authority to determine

the transaction; – but – as I said last, – I got the impression, that Anders

was not unwilling, – so that it depended on Nikolai now, whether

the price might be reduced. – Well now I have painted for a long

time on the rhubarb picture; – for a while I thought, that I had got

the apple tree right, – and I didn’t dare to do otherwise than to

put it out of sight, when Mayeren was here, – otherwise I’m almost

certain that he would have demanded to have it for himself or one of his

friends; – the picture with the moon (“Farm(yard) with a Ravine”), which I

completed at his request, – he no longer wished to

have, – I was careless enough not to hide the

new one, – and those two works basically cancel each other out.

This time Mayer was most interested in the new “still life

interior”, – the one with the fuchsia flowers, – he was absolutely insistent that I

promise to let him see it, when it was completed

I mentioned a little about Eie, who should now have first choice saying, that I

would most likely paint it over entirely, before it was completed,

and it might take years, before that happened, etc. “Farm(yard) with Ravine”

I would however send him; as one of his friends might

like it. As for the “Rhubarb picture”, I

was, as mentioned, nearly satisfied with the apple tree for a while, – but

now I have painted it again and am not as satisfied, – it

begins to resemble my “old” things to such an extent, – that I have

become like the proverb in the bible “As a dog returns to its vomit,

so a fool repeats his foolishness”, – I am struggling

with it in earnest, – it is difficult to work on

such an old thickly painted surface, – I have to use a knife

and continuously scrape away the old dabs, – I wish you

could make a trip out here this autumn, – so that I might hear your opinion about the

new tree, – the rest of the picture, I have as per your recommendation

not dared to touch at all – but I find now, that the fig-

ure on the left is superfluous, – since the new apple tree provides support

enough on that side – it also complements the colours in the mountain – (where

spring has not arrived quite yet) these “dead” colours – (before

the vegetation has become entirely alive) have always interested me, – and I

attempted, when I painted this picture, to achieve it immediately

as freshly and swiftly as possible; – I achieved a little perhaps, –

and this little I have not since dared to touch; and then

the other colours must be tuned to the colours of the mountain instead, – and a bit

of adjusting is perhaps necessary here and there, – particularly the earth around the rhubarbs –

likewise Engel’s head and hands; – I work slowly and with difficulty – because of asthma

the asthma, – which seems to be particularly severe this autumn, – doctor

Münster advises me not to take the adrenaline, which I got from dr.

Brock Martens, – I should rather use alcohol he says. I have

been a teetotaller for 14 days now, – and that is a lot for an old

sinner like myself. – Flùge has finished work on

one of the cabinets and has inserted plywood in the door temporarily –

(where the glass will go), – I have taken a look at it, and it

looks good, – it has turned out a little bigger than your cabinet, since there was

something, that was not evident from the drawing, how large it should

be, (the cross section that is) –– it was dependent on the angel of the corner, which

was not indicated. Flùge is apparently arranging a wedding for his daughter

Petra now this autumn, – that is surely the reason why he wants grain (barley), –

he has obtained a sack evidently, but it is obviously too

little, – I would also like to have a sack, but I wouldn’t

want to burden you with that, – I am moreover a member of the West Norway

consumer cooperation and can obtain it a little cheaper through the overseer here.

Engel keeps saying, that I must brew something for her, so that she can produce

enough milk for the child – “home brew” is particularly good for lactation; but

there is so much <fuss> involved in brewing it – especially with “the malting”.

Do you think it might be possible to obtain a sack of ready “malt” at Hansa

brewery, – and what would it cost? If I am not giving you too much

trouble in investigating this, I would be very grateful to find

this out when you have the opportunity. – Well the trees are beginning to

turn yellow now, – but the meadows are green, – it is unlikely there will be grain this year.

Kari speaks of You continuously and evidently yearns to return to You, – it

was surely strange in the beginning to live in misery again. May you

live well fondest greetings to your entire family from

all of us here in Stranden. The wind was so strong one day that it knocked over

the willow right down to its roots – everything became so “bare” here. With best wishes your devoted

Astrup

You have surely heard from Fluge, that the other

materials for the cabinets have arrived now

and in bad shape, – they have evidently been

left outdoors and are stained – (stepped on with

dirty shoes), – they must therefore be left to

dry for a spell. In the meantime we would like

to have Fluge put down linoleum

on the kitchen floor, – but Fluge does

not dare to do it without more complete

instructions than what I have been able to give

Would you perhaps repeat, what you wrote

this spring using simpler words, – and then if

you might send us some tacks, – it was

the former farmhand you see, who unpacked

the linoleum when it arrived, (while I was

in Bergen), and no one here has seen

the tacks anywhere, – the putty we used up

this spring unfortunately, when we could not get enough

chalk in the stores here, but the putty

we can make just as well ourselves, I imagine.

It’s possible that there isn’t any chalk in the general

stores now either, – if you would send us

some chalk, it would be wonderful, – I could

also use some for preparing canvases,

but that should actually be a little

finer chalk. Can you obtain for me from

the paint store a substance called

casein (½ kg.)? together with a little jar of

copaiva balsam (100 gr.) and a jar of lavender

oil and a jar of concentrated ammonia (100 gr.).

Could you also obtain for me a little glycerine

and ½ kg zink white (fresh)

Kari tells us that the silver spoon, which

you had left behind, did not arrive

with the package, that we sent; – it

was wrapped in Sofia’s apron, –

perhaps you have found it now?

If you encounter Thunold, you must greet

him and thank him for his letter, – he

never writes an address, – so it is diffi-

cult to reply to him. – Engel owes him

a bottle of cognac from prohibition’s early days.

we must try to get it for him.

Live well then and best wishes to

Revold if he is in Bergen Your
