Transkripsjon

Kjære frù Höst

Kùn nogle ord i all hast. Tusend

havde aldrig troet at kunne faa slige

priser for disse mangelfulde tryk – jeg

skulde nù have lyst at forsöge, hvor meget

det ifjor – 1000 kr., hvis Meyer skal have det;

til Deres svoger selvfölgelig billigere. St. Hans

i aar.

dyr her i Jölster) men saa kùnde jeg da eie

grùnden og slippe at gaa med ængstelse

for at Kari skal trakke ned græsset. Nù

har jeg kùn bygselkontrakt paa attelier-

tomten og hustomten – to smaa höist

kvælningsanfaldene – at arbeide rigtig tungt –

samt handelsmændene her paa stedet –

og saa kanske paa banklaanet – det er

jo heldigt for mig at lensmanden er min

gode ven, saa jeg ike saa snart bliver pantet

Ja De kjender jo vor nye prægtige lensmand

IV

nævner alt dette fordi De kanske kunde have

tak! Hils Deres mand og datter hjærteligst fra

Eders hengivne Astrup

Oversettelse

Dear Mrs. Höst

Just a few words in haste. Thank you

very much for the letter – I am utterly overwhelmed

by the money – and what You have done for me; –

I wrote yesterday (the day before yesterday) in haste something,

which probably made no sense – I had

not slept for two days by then and could

not think clearly; – I haven’t

slept much since then either; – but You can-

not believe, how happy I am anyway. I

would never have believed that I could get such

prices for these deficient prints – I

wish now that I could test, how much

better I might make new woodcuts, but

it is slow work and right now I should

rather paint. I shall requisition paints

today by telegraph; – then I will plant

my potatoes – and then I am ready to

get started on new things – if only I could be

a little better from this shortness of breath.

The large picture from last year with the many

figures I have discarded – but I will duplicate

it this year – it is similar to the style in "the first

II

days of autumn" (the girl at the stone table with the

large-leafed linden tree and the brook). It was

the picture we talked about, that Your brother-in-law

would possibly like to have – I will perhaps paint both

motifs this summer – but the large one is going

to be a bit expensive – if I shall

{…} include all the figures as I thought of doing

last year – 1000 kroner, if Meyer wants it;

cheaper for Your brother-in-law of course. The Midsummer

Eve picture is up in the mountains – I hope it hasn’t

been destroyed this winter – it didn’t actually

promise to be good by the way,

but I will try to paint it over again

this year.

The guarantee – well forgive me for mentioning

this – there is no longer any need of it.

Bailiff Øvrebö said, that such an opportunity

to buy land cheaply I will not get again – but

perhaps it was best that it ended as it

did. I should rather try to become debt-

free on my little house and if possible

buy the plots and an acre of land hereabouts

                     III

– it is sure to be expensive – (the land is good, but

expensive here in Jölster) but then I would own

the land and not have to go about worrying

that Kari will trample the grass. Now

I only have a contract to lease the plot with

the studio and the one the house is on – I have

two indispensible buildings not included in

the contract and now I must build another

building for clothes and a storehouse – but this

time I will not let myself be cheated by

the construction workers – because now I shall

build both the stone foundation and the house myself –

it is also the only thing, that helps against

the choking seizures – doing very heavy work –

when I notice that one is coming on.

I must now first pay off a little of my

debt to Ole Eide Bergen and Haave Florö

as well as the local merchants here –

and then perhaps the bank loan – I am

of course fortunate that the bailiff is my

good friend, so that I won’t be foreclosed too soon

Well You know our excellent new bailiff

IV

Sören M. Øvrebö – advocat for riksmaal –

bank director – mediation commissioner – chairman

of the school board and parish board etc. and who

has now become a bailiff as well – he

is the most competent farmer in the village and

built the first dairies and founded the public

library, where he was the librarian for many

years – he planted the first cultivated forest

in Jölster – and he will probably get into parliament

in the next period as he was deputy representative and nearly

became a member of parliament in the last election; – I

mention all of this because You may perhaps be

interested in knowing, that his grandfather was a

similar municipal personality and lived to be very

old – he is the one You call

"Man with Goblin’s Hat". – You are aware that portraits are impossible

in woodcuts, but the old print resembled him

perfectly – that’s why I kept one of the

old prints – the others I discarded back then.

"The nude" I shall print and send when it is dry

enough, that it can be mailed. Well again many

thanks! Greet You husband and daughter warmly from

Your devoted Astrup
