besvare Deres venlige brev snarest. – Vi blev

jo meget skuffede over, at Dere ikke kom, –

men den "spanske" var jo udenfor bereg-

ningen, – nù raser den ogsaa her i bygden. –

II

– Vi maa forresten her i

giver meget over maximalpris her paa

III

her havde været blind alarm flere gange,

men nù var det sikkert, – Börnene blev

i hast vaskede og pyntede, – og hùn kom-

steder at reise nù. –

Tak for gratulationen – jeg kan vel egentlig

ogsaa takke Eder for stipendiet ogsaa; – thi

stipendiùm; thi Eders telegram kom meget for-

tror De? Med de hjærteligste hilsener fra

Engel og mig Eders hengivne

Nikolai Astrup

God lykke til Amerikaturen!

Dear Mrs. Höst

Just a few words in haste – I am suffering ter-

ribly from choking seizures, but feel that I must

respond to Your kind letter straightaway. – We were

of course very disappointed, that You did not come, –

but the "Spanish flu" had not been included in our calcu-

lation, – it is raging here in the village now too. –

Engel is ill, and we have been afraid that it

is "the Spanish flu" – fortunately we have good

cognac – as it is supposed to be the best medicine

against "the Spanish flu".

You ask whether "waiting in vain" for You

has ruined some of the summer for us and

for our plans – You must not trouble yourself with

such thoughts, – we would love to make it

as pleasant as possible for You – as a

small gesture of gratitude for all that You have done for us,

and we had arranged a thing or two

in that regard. The procurement

of necessities etc. we can use ourselves. – If

only we could send You something – for exam-

II

ple butter, as You also mention; – but as

You know, all transport [of goods] is illegal, – we will

attempt, if it is possible to

"smuggle" some good butter through my

brothers, when they travel to Kristiania [Oslo]; –

they are students and have thought about attempting

such an export for their own use as well, – they are

by the way allowed to bring 3 kg. but it is

sufficient for a while. – Incidentally here in the

village we have to practically ask "at gunpoint" to get the butter, that

we need; because these buyers (who smug-

gle large quantities of butter into Bergen)

pay far above the maximum price around

here, and the producers therefore don’t want to

sell to the local people for a maximum price,

and if they ask for more, they are afraid,

that we will report them, – something that I for

one would not hesitate for a second to

do; – there was a man here yesterday who offered

a quantity of butter for 8 kr. per kg., – it was

not terribly overpriced, – but I told him

"get lost", – and if it hadn’t by chance

been Engel’s brother, – I would have immediately

III

reported him, – these are demoralising

times for the rural population, – even people who

sit on the provisioning council are no better

than others, – and the "pious ones" in the village are as

usual worst of all, when it comes to

this "mammon".

Well apropos mammon, I must thank You

straightaway for the sale of Midsummer Eve Bonfire, – I had

received 300 kr more than eight days ago

and when I haven’t confirmed this, it was

because, at the time we were expecting You from day to day: –

one day Engel was utterly convinced, that it

was You arriving, – she can see very far

Engel – and could see at "Næset" (ca. 5 km from here)

a lady with a white hat and a gentleman – both

city folk – Höst and the Mrs. had finally arrived –

there had been a false alarm several times,

but now it was certain, – The children were

hastily washed and dressed up, – and she com-

manded me to raise the flag –

otherwise everything was in order; – well, it was in

fact city folk who arrived, – but not the expected ones.

Had I known, that You were as close as

IIII

Voss – Eide, Engel and I would have gladly taken

a ride and met up with You; – I would have then

been informed of the stipend and thought

about the possibility of accompanying Höst

to America – there is hardly anywhere

else to travel to nowadays. –

Thank you for the congratulations – I might actually

thank You for the stipend as well; – for

without Your telegram I would not have applied for it –

incidentally I didn’t know, that I had applied for this

stipend; because Your telegram arrived here very

garbled: – it read "the Malien endowment" –

and I applied for "the Malien" endowment – and thought

least of all about the Mohr endowment, – which I

had barely heard of; just prior to that

I was congratulated with the "government" stipend – and this was repeated

3-4 times this summer (even from Prytz).

Well let us see whether it is possible to arrange

to paint Höst’s portrait around Christmastime,

as You mention, might a little studio be found in Kristiania [Oslo],

do You think? With warmest wishes from

Engel and me Your devoted

Nikolai Astrup

Good luck on your American tour!
