Rowan and Aspen in Bloom

Oil on canvas, 1908 - 1911

Unknown owner

There are no known descriptions or photographs of this painting, but Astrup’s title indicates that it is a springtime landscape with a tree in bloom.

The painting “Rowan and Aspen in Bloom” was on sale at Astrup’s exhibition at Kunstnerforbundet (artists’ association) in 1911, where it was bought by someone called Schnitler for 150 kroner. It is not known who this Schnitler was. It could be the art historian Carl Wille Schnitler (1879–1926), with whom Astrup corresponded, but it might also be Didrik Thomas Johannes Schnitler (1871–1915), the brother-in-law of Astrup’s good friend Henrik Lund (1879–1935). The history of the painting after 1911 is therefore unknown.
