Kjære Hr. Meyer!
De er saa altfor snild!
Tùsend tak! Jeg föler mig
skamfùld; – thi jeg gaar
her og stùderer paa, om jeg
i mit forrige nervöse
brev skùlde have skrevet
noget, – som kùnde ligne
en "hentydning" til "tiggeri":
om et tillæg i prisen; –
jeg har altsaa "ond samvit-
tidhed", – (enda jeg ikke havde
ment noget saadant), og
havde jeg ikke været den
2
lùsfattige djævel, som jeg
er, med gjældskrav hver
dag, – saa havde jeg bedt
Dem pent om at tage disse
penge igjen, – eller om at faa ùd-
före et andet arbeide for
dem, – det sidste vil jeg
gjerne nù faa bede om; –
og hvad jeg finder af gam-
le pennetegninger skal De
have, – ùten noget extra
"tillæg" herefter; – men jeg
har endnù ikke faaet
ryddet op i alt papirrùsket
fra mit gamle hjem paa
3
Myklebùst, – og mit "atte-
liere" her er nærmest et
pakrùm eller pùlterkammer,
– saa overfyldt –, at jeg næsten
ikke kan snù mig, – saa
jeg blir nödt at "bygge" igjen,
skal jeg nogengang faa orden
i det hele og faa plads til
blindrammer og træsnit-plater,
som nù snart svömmer ùd
over hele rùmmet (min datter
Kari maa ogsaa forelöbig have
sin vævstol her; – da hùn væver
billedvæv trænger hùn lys). –
tört, – skal sendes til Kramer, – og
prisen skal jeg altsaa ikke nævne
uten til Dem – jeg skriver derfor
straks igjen. Dette – for at takke hjærteligst
Deres Astrup
Qùitering.
For modtagelsen af Kr. 750 – fra
Hr. H. J. Meyer – for træsnittet:
"Rævebjöller" – qùiteres herved.

Dear Mr. Meyer!
You are far too kind!
Many thanks! I feel
ashamed; – as I pace around
here trying to ponder, whether
in my last anxious
letter I might have written
something, – that could have resembled
a “hint” at “begging”:
for an increase in the price; –
I have in other words a “bad con-
science”, – (even though I had no
such intention), and
had I not been the
2
destitute devil, that I
am, with debt claims every
day, – then I would have asked
You politely to take this
money back, – or to be permitted to exe-
cute another work for
you, – the latter I will
gladly ask to do; –
and what I find among old
pen drawings You shall
have, – without any extra
“increase” in the future; – but I
have not yet managed to
clear up all the paper debris
from my old home in
3
Myklebùst, – and my “stu-
dio” here is practically a
packing room or storage room,
– so overcrowded – , that I can hardly
turn around [in it], – so
I will be forced to “build” again,
if I am ever going to put everything
in order and make room for
stretchers and woodcut boards,
which will soon be spread out
over the entire room (my daughter
Kari must also temporarily have
her loom here; – when she weaves
tapestries she needs light). –
The picture for Erpeckom is now
dry, – will be shipped to Kramer, – and
the price I shall not mention
other than to You– I will therefore
write soon again. This – in order to thank you wholeheartedly
Your Astrup
Confirmation of Payment.
The receipt of Kr. 750 – from
Mr. H. J. Meyer – for the woodcut:
“Foxgloves” – is hereby acknowledged.
