Kjære Höst med frùe!

Nù er jeg

Nettop hjemkommen fra en studie-

tùr i fjeldene, har derfor ikke

faaet Deres brev för nù. Deres

brev, for hvilket jeg takker Dem

meget, var ankommet hid för

jeg reiste, men var ikke afhentet

fra Posthùset, jeg beder Dem derfor

ùndskylde, at De har maattet

vente saa længe paa svar.

Det skùlde have været meget

morsomt at truffet Dem i

Jölster – min far glædede sig

ogsaa meget til træffe Dem.

Ja her har været et stygt veir

her ogsaa – jeg var paa fjeldet

og vinden var saa voldsom, at

den knækkede af mine telt-

stænger, saa jeg maatte ligge

en nat ùde i et frygteligt

regndrev, da det var for mörkt

til at se at komme sig hjem om

kvelden. Jeg har nogen prægtige

motiver deroppe i en botten,

som kaldes "Trollbotnen"; men det

er næsten 3 mil inde i fjeldene

og tager mig en dagsmarsh at

komme did op – saa jeg maa

vist slùtte mit arbeide der for

iaar, da der alt er begyndt at

komme nysne imellem regnby-

gerne, og da varer det ikke længe

för vegetationen skifter farve –

det er kjedeligt saaledes at

forlade halvfærdige og nettop paa-

begyndte arbeider – men min

helbred tillader mig ikke at reise

did op igjen mere iaar.

have – selvfölgelig skal De

ikke föle Dem forbùnden til

at beholde bogen af dem,

hvis De synes, at jeg har ödelagt

det gamle billede.

Med tak for Eders venlige ind-

bydelse er jeg

Eders Ærbödige og

forbùndne

Dear Höst and Mrs.!

I have

just now returned from a working

tour in the mountains, and have therefore not

received Your letter until now. Your

letter, for which I thank You

profusely, had arrived here before

I left, but was not fetched

at the Post Office, I therefore beg Your

forgiveness, because You have had to

wait so long for a reply.

It would have been very

enjoyable to have met You in

Jölster – my father looked very much

forward to meeting You as well.

Well the weather has been inclement

here too – I was in the mountains

and the wind was so violent that

it broke my tent

poles, so that I had to lie

outdoors one night in a terrible

downpour, since it was too dark

to see to make my way home in the

evening. I have some magnificent

motifs in a ravine up there,

which is called “Trollbotnen ”; but it

is nearly 30 kilometres into the mountains

and takes me a day’s march to

arrive up there – so I will have to

conclude my work there for this

year, as it has already begun to

snow in between the rain

showers, and then it is not long

before the vegetation changes colours –

it is irritating to have to

abandon half-finished and just

begun works like that – but my

health does not allow me to travel

up there again this year.

The picture that I was supposed to work

on this summer for You, I am not

completely satisfied with as yet – it

is difficult to work on an

older picture – I have therefore

tried to paint a new picture

of the same motif – those who

have seen both pictures, like the

new one best, and I will therefore, when

I come to Bergen[,] let

You choose which [of them] You wish

to have – of course You must

not feel obligated to

keep both of them,

if You feel that I have ruined

the old picture.

With gratitude for Your kind in-

vitation I remain

Your Respectful and

obliging
