––– Ja tùsend tak for din

taget det, da han alt for længe siden havde faaet {…}

sig at lùkke op alle grinder; – vi faar pröve at finde

en slags "patent lùkker" til grinden). –––

ret; – dù maa da erindre, at det överste rör (Nr. 2)

maa være lidt videre i gjennemsnit nedentil, helst

lidt "konisk" (tragt-agtigt) (ca 1/2 cm större diameter)

Men dù vil kanske helst have röret i et rör

helt altsaa, – det gaar jo an, men er da lidt vanskeligere

at passe ind, (man brùger det jo i regelen i to rör – for lettere

I tilfælde

An-

Oversettelse

Dear Kramer!

Many thanks for the letter and money, – they arrived how-

ever the same day, that I sat writing to you and waiting for the post,

but the yellow certified note was stuck inside a package containing a book,

which I received at the same time (Miss Refling Hagen’s latest book), and I did

not see it before the postman had left. ––– Well many thanks for your

sale for me, – it comes at a “crucial moment” to

obtain some money; – Engel has bought a lot of meat, – which we

owe for, – and it has to be paid immediately. Regarding the

black print of “willow goblin”, I think your price was

stiff, – I was thinking 80–90 kr., – that is even expensive

compared to “Midsummer Eve bonfire” for example, which

Mrs. Breyholtz should have got for 250 kr., – as I can easily print

4–5 “black” “willow goblins” in the time I print one “Midsummer Eve bonfire”.

Likewise it may perhaps now during the recession

be too much to take 50 kr. for “Home from work”, – as I

would undertake to print 25–30 of these, while I print

let’s say – one of Foxgloves. – Well dear Kramer

I’m sorry, that I mentioned the matter of “the chisel” (crowbar), – you

must not go to any trouble to obtain a new one, – I

believe it is the previously mentioned person K., who has

taken it, since he much too long ago had been {…}

given the keys by F. – I asked him to search carefully for

it during the dismantling, – now I will promise him a couple

of kroner as a finder’s fee, if he finds it, – that will perhaps

2

help, – provided it hasn’t been thrown into the river along

with his other tools, – as I talked about in my last letter.

Well there’s a lot that “remains” to do before

the studio will be finished, – the “felt”, – to set

the pane (mirrored glass) with, – I have evidently not received, or

perhaps Didr. Andersen doesn’t believe it’s necessary

to use such, – and that one can use “putty” instead?

At “Neset” everything has stood still due to 3 “public holi-

days” in a row now (since I wrote) – (common prayer day, All Saints’ Day and Sunday)

I was out there the day before yesterday, and everything looked fine – the black current

trees, that we planted this spring were still green, – despite several days

of frost, – the rhubarb on the other hand was totally frozen; – Well we have

talked several times about sending You more potatoes

from Neset, but everything was so scanty – the ones we sent were chosen

among the biggest ones, – there must be something wrong with the soil out there,

because we have fertilised it far more than is customary, – perhaps

it is because it has lain fallow and unfertilised for such a long

time, that it has become “manure-resistent”, as they say here, – I

will try potash and super phosphate next year and see, if

it doesn’t help, – and then we have discussed the idea, of maybe

cultivating half of the potatoes for you, if you wanted to get

hold of some very early potatoes for buds. Now the

unfortunate result with potatoes out there can partially

be due to the critters from the neighbouring farms that break

in (at the end of August both years) and devour all the potato

3

plants – (my enemy in Øianne has a cow, that has learned

to open all the gates; – we must try to find

some kind of “patented lock” for the gate). –––

Well, as soon as the chimney and firewalls have come up

I will take exact measurements of the distance from the floor to

the opening leading into the chimney or firewall, – but in so

far as I understood the workmen, they will not set up

either the chimney or the firewall now (out of fear of the

frost, which will make the binding agent fragile,

if it freezes before it has hardened or dried), – the

same applies to the fireplace, – but you can

send the stove; – because once you have measured the opening in

the stove, you can fashion one of the Nr.1 elbow pipes based on the

stove and send it together with it, – the other NR. 2-

elbow pipe can then be made based on the “remaining” measurement later; – in the drawing

Sketch. Text: Nr 2. NR 1

the Nr. 1 pipe is drawn up with a solid line, – while the Nr. 2 pipe is dot-

ted; – you must remember, that the top pipe (Nr. 2)

must be on average a little wider at the bottom, preferably

a little like a “cone” (funnel-like) (approx. 1/2 cm larger in diameter)

But you will perhaps prefer to have the pipe all in one

whole in other words, – that is possible, but is a bit more difficult

to fit in, (one normally makes use of two pipes – in order to more easily

be able to remove it, when it has to be “cleaned of soot”. In case

you want to have the pipe connected “all in one pipe”, you must measure

the stove’s opening and wait to make the pipe until you have the measurement (sometime

in the spring), – but the stove you can send immediately, – I will

4

incidentally go out there shortly (before the postman returns)

and take an approximate measurement, – you can then make the pipe

a couple of inches longer – (I will by the way also take a

generous measurement”), then we can later easily “cut”

off, whatever is too long, so that it fits just right. –––

Thank you for the linoleum commission, – (it will be

specifically for linoleum prints), – I will test it shortly,

but the dimensions were a bit small, – I thought.

Ask Didr. Andersen to send me a glass diamond,

since a couple of the glass panes were measured incorrectly

(by me and Knùt Pedersen); – a diamond we have great use

for in the house, panes are constantly being broken, and we are forced to live with

drafts and cold and wind for months, because the mer-

chants here either lack glass or cannot cut

the right measurement and so on. – we have several such incorrectly cut

panes lying about, which are merely broken or gone to waste.

If I were to obtain glass in suitably large formats from Didr. An-

dersen, I would cut them myself, because common glass is

easy enough to cut, – More often than not I have to travel to

the merchants and cut it myself anyway, when it

has to be correct, though the “double” panes I have never

tried, but I can try. Oh dear, the postman is here!

Live well! Greetings to Aagot and

the children from Your

Astrup

P.S. The postman passed me again on his route – he promised to wait

in Sandal until I get the measurement. It is approx. 1.80 m. from the floor to the opening in the firewall Make

one pipe fit into the other, then it can be adjusted precisely when

being installed! Greetings from your kitchen here, where I am writing

on a cutting board. Best wishes your Astrup
