mærket trods streiken, – havde faaet baade dram

(elskerinde?)

Sandal 12 June 1921.

Dear Kramer!

I wrote to you a while ago about the

little smallholding – Øiene, – well you have probably not

had the time to think about the matter, ––– I

have at least not heard anything from you about it, – the owner

is pressuring me, that I must come to a decision; whether –

he will be allowed to sell, – I cannot decide

anything, – he claims, that he will allow us to have

the Island and what lies as far as the river and a little

outlying field near the lake for 2000, if he is allowed

to sell the rest. I believe it is possible, but

we should probably haggle. – Well everything is behind

Engel now[,] she had a daughter yesterday, 11th June – it went

marvelously, – despite all the negative forebodings, – the infant

was fully developed. – Engel is also well and the phle-

bitis is much better. Today Fond returned

home from his trip to Bergen and he had had a wonder-

ful time despite the strike, – had been offered both a dram

and beer by you, he said, – you had said

that you would probably come here around the 30th of June

Well you are warmly welcome! But there won’t be

the same hospitality that you showed me; because I am utterly

broke, – we have almost never experienced such pover-

ty and debt – and pressure from all sides from cred-

itors – now I am letting the world takes its twisted course and

am trying to just make it through from day to day, – this house,

that I began building, – I must leave it standing as is for the time

being, – it has already cost me enough, without

revealing particularly much where the money has disappeared to.

Beyer has been here – with his? (mistress?) – but was <clearly> not

as keen on buying a woodcut, as he had written about –

I should have nevertheless made some woodcuts, so that he might have seen

more to choose between, – his lady (evidently

a divorced wife) did not agree with him, etc.

I have negotiated with several people here to obtain

milk for you for a reasonable price, but they create so many

difficulties. – Flùge is having a visit from his relatives

II

in Bergen, and he, who originally so magnanimously promised you

milk behaves now as a competitor in order to

obtain or reserve milk for his relatives; – I have

now spoken to Olaùs and Oline; – (they had a Christ-

ening and I was a godfather) but Olaùs leaves it to Olina

and Olina to Olaùs, – together they are leasing the little

neighbouring farm – (the closest farm) and I

never quite understand, what they mean; –

but I hope, there will be a solution – even if

we have to hire a boy to fetch the milk at

a distance; – we have unfortunately no more

than what we require ourselves and barely that, otherwise you

would of course get it from us, – but as I said,

we will find a solution; – both in

Sandal and Myklebùst there should be enough milk available,

even though people are more and more letting their cows bear

“young in winter” in order to enjoy the milk in winter – and arethus nearly

without milk during the summer. – I should probably send word to

the man with the hams to “hold onto” them

until you arrive, – you have decided, haven’t you, whether

Text upside down: Can you get hold of a barrel – glass jar or the kind for wine.

The juice will be sent immediately

you want to have them or not?

Well dear Kramer! you must pardon my chaotic

letter, – I am nervous and in a bad mood, – I

am utterly “depressed” both spiritually, physically

and financially, – particularly the last. – this house

Yes it is true ––– Fluge has worked on

your your cabinets, and he is evidently soon finished

with them, but he “says” that he lacks ma-

terials, – he had “probably” forgotten to give you the width

of the planks, and it was his intention, that they should

be 8-inch planks; – the ones you sent were so narrow, that

he had to glue together so many widths, and it

took a lot of time, – now he asked me to tell you, that

you must send him 8 planks of 8-inch width 12 feet,

Well I know nothing about this, – you may perhaps let

it wait until you have a look at the things, – but this advice

you should not relay to Flùge for the sake of neighbourly relations.

The 8 planks you can bring with you, when you come – if you

do not wish to send them now. – Well, then you must live well and

accept warmest wishes from Engel and me. Greet

your wife and children warmly from your devoted

Astrup
