Kjære Kramer!

Tak for dit brev. Jeg har desværre endnù ikke faaet

malerikassen afsted, da jeg har været svært daarlig;

bilen!

billedet helt færdig (– bl.a. hænderne til Engel

for mörkt.

jo gjöre hvert lærred lidt længere, end man tænker at

Man kan jo ogsaa have

strög istedenfor 4, – men lærredet maa da bearbeides desto sterkere.

Hilsen fra alle her.

Oversettelse

Dear Kramer!

Thank you for your letter. I have unfortunately not yet sent

the crate off with the painting, as I have been seriously ill;

the motorcar! – well bloody hell, – it left early yesterday

morning while it was still dark before the devil had

put his skates on, – they wanted to take advantage of the frost, that

had come during the night, which hardened the roads; – we

could not imagine the likelihood, that it could run

on the muddy road; – and the motorcar from here has not

returned, – we were told a few days ago, that it

would not be running any more this year, – and if I had had

a clue, that it would leave yesterday, I would have

been up and woken Zakarias, – I don’t sleep very much

during the night, and if I had been unwell, I might have a-

roused Engel or Kari and had them waken Zakarias.

Well I have wasted an opportunity – I thought, I could

have the postal service take the crate, but a new postman

has been hired here, who is stubborn and exorbitant in price, when he

does people a favour – the last one was kind, but always short

of money so he had to be greased, – (he borrowed 20 kr. from

me this summer, and these I will probably never see again or

be refunded in the form of driving; –) but as far as the picture is concerned

I believe, there will be a solution, – people here travel now

and then; but for the time being one will avoid it I assume until the roads

are better, and that will unlikely occur before the snow arrives.

Well that is as far as I got the night before last – now the

crate with the picture has been sent – let us hope

it will arrive safely. As you will see, the

picture is not quite finished (– among other things I will adjust

Engel’s hands another time); – it was so dark here

in these small cabins of mine, that it was impossible to

do anything about it now, – and Engel was too busy to

“sit” [for me]. This evening “the scoundrel” and the little girl from

Stranden returned home, – I am very curious and keen

to hear the results of his errand for us – I

am just afraid, that it has all been bungled – the prices

have risen for pork, and I’m afraid “the scoundrel” has perhaps sold

the ham to someone else in Bergen, – and here the prices have

steadily risen of late, – I asked for fresh ham (which

will become cured by the summer) and the price is

3.00 kr. per kg.; – I have to have some pork now,

and I will be forced to pay that price, – I have waited to

buy until now in the hope of a decrease [in price], – but I am always

unlucky with my hesitating. The picture of Sunde you can see I

have painted over a bit – I intended to imbue it with

more mystique and pre-dawn atmosphere, – but I don’t know if

I have achieved anything, – your wife will probably find it

too dark. In the rhubarb picture I have placed one more apple

tree behind the first, but a little adjusting has to be done

later – I strove to make it soft – perhaps you

think, I should remove it again, – well as you said, – I will

have a chance to make changes later – after verbal con-

ferences with You two. Well forgive my handwriting, etc. I am

ill and weary from toil and medications. – Have been working

on a woodcut for Beyer (it will be sent to the

wife of Manner Sewele, who was here this summer), – hopefully

he won’t cheat me, – I must “make the best print, that I

possibly can”, he said, – and I have done so:

one block per day is the most during these short days – often

less – 8 blocks in all, and I have continued for nearly a fortnight –

have asked for 200 kr. – it must be considered cheap.

The canvas yes – you ask, whether one cannot make long

lengths [of it] to cut from as desired, – well there you have

the crux” of it , why the factories cannot make good canvas,

it is in fact impossible to make good canvas in long

lengths, – it is an impossibility, – to explain it would be

“a long story” to include in a letter, – – it will have to wait, until we can

talk about it, – primarily it has to do with the canvas’s fibre and thread,

which cannot be stretched into a long canvas: – when a

little “clipping” of this is stretched, the primer bursts into a thousand

microscopic cracks – the oil and paint seep into the can-

vas itself and causes it to rot and become sodden, – but one can

of course make each canvas a bit longer, than one plans to

use, and then clip a little off, – or one can have

frames in various lengths and heights for example

100 x 75–80 x 60–70 x 55–60 x 45, etc., – even if one

had “a continuous shared length”, – one is still

dependent on the width, when one wishes to have different sizes,

as one will have to cut some off anyway. It’s a good idea incidentally to have

a specific size, that one grows accustomed to – Weren-

skiold once said, – one immediately looks for a new motif in

the format one knows by heart. One can also have

2 sizes for example 100 x 75 and 75 x 50, – the first for

(large) “pictures” – the second for “sketches”, – one can use

the same type of canvas width for both formats – “the sketch canvases” will then have

a rather lengthy format, which can be cut from as desired, –

it might also be convenient on a sketch to have a little along

the edge “to make noteson (in other words a kind of “margin”), – I always did that

during my early painting years, and I think it would have benefitted me, had

I continued with it. A somewhat simpler primer, – well I

have experimented with that, – one can in any case manage with 2

coats instead of 4, – but the canvas must then be worked more vigorously.

To return to “the length”, I believe that by

fashioning a long very strong and expressly adapted frame, [one] might

prime lengths of 6 alen (approx. 4 m.) – but what would one actually

gain by that? – With such “lengths” one almost always ends up

with a useless remnant of 20–30 cm. extra when

one is finished, – and that is a waste. Well it’s time I

stopped – “to be continued in the next issue”. Say hello to your wife and your children

Hope to hear from you soon, if You are [both] very dissatisfied

with the picture, – you can paint over the worst yourself. Greetings from everyone here.
