Kjære Kramer

Dù blir nok plaget i hver post nù –

ingen fare for konkùrrenter.

(4,50 kr. pr. meter). Plager dere!

Fik idag brev fra Didr. Andersen. – ser deraf at

paa posthùset for at indlevere pengebrevet

(uden dog at nævne amerikabrevet) – at opsöke

II

regnet paa "grùndeieren", at dù garanterer 4000 Kr.

Ja posten er ventende, – her kom intet brev

Nikolai

2 fleskeskinker vægt 13,5 kg. a 5,50 Kr. = 74, 25 Kr.

81 ¸ 74,25 = 6,75

P.S

Oversettelse

Dear Kramer

You are sure to be bothered with each postal delivery now –

you are probably thinking, – Well this time it has

nothing to do with the transaction, – it is temporarily at a standstill.

The landowner I spoke with yesterday, – everything is

in order, – though he did speak a little about the mill,

(he had to have both mill falls examined

first, before he can renounce one of them),

I wrote a draft of the purchase agreement, but

he was reluctant to commit himself – – Although there is as yet

no danger of competitors. Nevertheless he is

reluctant to commit himself to replacing the roof in the event

[the sale is] “contested”, – is nevertheless willing to replace it partially –

he suggested negotiating with the afore-mentioned brother

(my former farmhand – not the merchant)

to be safe against allodial contests, which

would be avoided if this man got a part of the smallholding.

Well we are in a sad state these days – Engel is very

ill – a “miscarriage” with serious complications – dangerous

haemorrhaging – we have a midwife and a nurse here. – Engel

did not suffer well the motorcar trip to Förde or back up again –

she noticed that she felt unwell when she was going to “saw” some

wood for Kirsten in Förde and upon returning home she

carried a heavy basin filled with about 20–30 litres of water. –

I’m afraid it will be a lengthy affair –

Today she asked me to write to a certain Sigvard <Dösvig>, whom

she has seen in the newspaper (Corner of Sandviksgt. road and the marketplace)

he evidently has cheap and strong alpaca, do you think

your wife might obtain 7–8 metres of it for her

for a black dress? (4.50 kr. per metre). A nuisance for you!

Received today a letter from Didr. Andersen. – understand from it that

you have paid for more than half the frame for the large

woodcut, – I received the bill, while you were here but

did not wish to say anything. I am not

allowed to give you anything, I understand. –

We have phoned twice to the clerk [in] Förde about

the anchovy, but he denies that it has arrived in Förde.

With many greetings from Fond and and all of us here

3 days later

Dear Kramer!

Just a few words in haste – When I went

to the postal service to deliver the letter containing money

to you, I discovered something, which caused me to

retrieve the letter – I specifically saw a letter from America

to the cottars, and since I thought, that it

might contain matters of interest regarding our case

I immediately called on the “guardian” and got him to-

(without however mentioning the letter from America) – call upon

cottars to find out, whether there might not be a

trip to America this year, – as a result of this

my letter to you containing money was delayed by one postal delivery, –

but in return I can inform you of positive

news; – it is as good as decided,

that the cottars shall depart in the very near fu-

ture to America, – tickets and such are evidently already

secured, – and the daughter shall now travel to Bergen

most likely around Midsummer to arrange [travel] agents, passports

and the like, – since she is now going to Bergen, we know

in fact, that the departure is close at hand, – another circum-

stance strengthens this impression of the timing:, –

her boyfriend must (if he shall manage to

get away and “escape” military service)

must be gone by around Midsummer).

The guardian has also received authorisation from

the cottars to deal with the landowner

and my proposal to combine everything – the

rights and buildings etc. together “as one” has now

by indirect route come back to the guard-

ian, – the cottars have in other words without knowing

it accepted my proposal – (had they only

known that it originated with me), – they

found “the landowner’s proposal reasonable and left it to

the guardian to decide the price, – so now

we have more or less “the upper hand”, –

the guardian must be conscientious

to a certain degree; – but “the tenant” is in

any case eliminated; – and now we only have

to deal with the landowner, – I thought, that

I should perhaps get an advance binding commitment from

him now, but he must not feel, that we are afraid of

competitors, – I have to scurry from one to

to the other, – and I must be careful not to say the wrong

II

thing; because “the landowner” or the cottars must at

all costs not get the slightest inkling, that I

am in contact with “the guardian”, and that I

have convinced him to support the proposal, which

originally came from me, – the guardian

would suffer the consequences, if such a thing became known, and the tenant

would certainly take advantage of it, – I am so “sus-

picious” these days, that I have not even dared to

inform Engel about everything yet. –––

What I shall do now, I am not sure yet, –

a binding commitment from the landowner would be perfect, – so

that he doesn’t contrary to expectations fail us, after we

have prepared and relieved him of possession of the

rights and the buildings. The first step I think

would be, to assist the landowner, in getting Olaùs

off his back by writing to him and saying,

that he now has an offer of 9–10 thousand and to hear,

whether he is still in. A little note from you ad-

dressed to “the landowner”, saying that you guarantee 4000 Kr.

(in other words half the offer) would be perfect to

stimulate the landowner with; “hard cash” is

helpful, when it comes to swift decisions,

– a “note” of this kind would have the effect of a dram on

the landowner in a decisive moment; - would you

like to prepare a draft for a provisional

purchase agreement. – Can you get hold of “stamped stationery”

for the final purchase agreement, or shall we write

it on ordinary paper and just have it stamped

with a seal? – We should probably have the property

appraised – (if it isn’t already) as well as entered as a separate

property in the Land Registry (at least the Island), – what name shall we in

that case give this property – perhaps it is best we

retain the old name “Øiene”, or a new one

which is similar – such as “Elva öy”.

Well the postman is waiting, – there was no letter

from you today, – it is underway; – we should either

send it by “special delivery” or as “insured mail” or simply

seal it with wax – (the postal functionary in Sandal is

also Olaùs’ brother-in-law). – When necessary

I send my letters via Myklebùst. Well may

you live well and again many thanks!

Greetings from all of us to you and your family

2 hams weighing 13.5 kg. at 5.50 kr. = 74. 25 kr.

Received for Engel’s errand kr. 81 –

which was calculated at a 6.00 kr. per kg. price

81 ¸ 74.25 = 6.75

P.S

You must pardon that my letter became

so muddled towards the end – I should have sent

you these 6.75 enclosed, but the postman is

expected any minute, – so you can

make note of it as a “down payment on the picture”, that you

say you have commissioned, – (together with the

rest that you have paid in advance for me) – I have

no small change, – well I have kr. 50. – take

them and let what is left over go towards a down

payment of my additional debts to you.

With best wishes from Engel and me

Your devoted
