Kjære Thúnold!

Det gjorde meg illt aa lese

brevet dit at dú skúlde

værte úte fyre so mykjen

ufjælde – dar i Nordfjord. – Dat

var mest so eg tykte eg hadde

noke skúld i dat eg og – dinna

elendege tavla, som skúlde bekom-

me so mykje illt – dat kom eg

no minst af alt ihúg, at dú

skúlde værte skoten for glug – ka

fan slags arbeid vilde dei daa

have – (var inkje dinne <krypen>

deira – han "jessús" majestætisk

núk – elde var han inkje "söte"

núk – jau eg kjennar ditte "sötejes-

sús fokjet" – værre {...} finnst

inkje.) Eg har vorte úte fyre eit

"kristelegt" ungdomslag eingong, so eg

veit nokenlonde kor dei er. Fyst

fann dei inkje arbeidet mit

godt núk, so laut eg betale silke-

dúken og alt "tilbehör", snore, dúske

og liknande, – dei kúnde inkje

brúke dúken, naar eg hadde

"skjæmt den úd" med mi maaling,

ja eg baúd dei trakst pengarne –

nei dei vilde inkje endaa trakst take

imot dei (– dat var 60 kr. –) för dei

hadde <hilde> möte. 8 dager ette fækk

eg höyre, at dei hadde fére ikring

te naboerne mine og lasta meg

og sagt, at dei laut vist take sak

paa meg, fyre di eg tænkte núk paa

aa "snyte" <dúm> – og so eit par dage

ette fæk eg trugsmaal baade úm eit

og anna darso eg inkje paa raúde

rappen sende dúm pengarne fyre dúken.

Eg sende pengarne same dag og gav dúm

same trugsmaal, úm dei inkje paa

raude rappen sende meg "kvitering", at

vi var <skjelde>, eg brúkte deira eigne

ord – men daa vart dar klage paa

meg, at jeg hadde vore so "grove" mot

<dúm>, at dat var "<öife>". Men ka trúr

dú sia dei fann paa, – jaú dei reiste te

ein annan maalar og rita úp fyre ho-

nom, kor dei vilde have fana – hoggande

net so, so eg hadde maalt heime,

samme motiv – same fargar og same

"motto", som eg hadde vilja grave <dúm>.

Og so fæk dei seg maala ei fana so

like mi, so ho kúnde værte, naar

maalaren inkje hadde set ette mit

arbeid. Dú nemnar bondekultúr – eg

har helde inkje set mykkje te hono

her paa disse kante – "upvartarkultur"

er eit godt namn – "pengeforteneste"

"skysgútkultur" og "bedrageri" dat er

her mest af – eg har over 1000 – tusend

kroner te go paa bygdarne her, som

eg aldig kan faa raúdt öyre af – eg

faar pröve dat no úm dagarne – eg

bygge eit lite hús – bygningskaranne

gjære ingjenting, naar eg inkje ser paa

– dei er vorten vande fraa statens veg-

arbeid, at dat berre gjeld úm aa fuske

fraa seg arbeidet so godt dei kan,

og kjöyrarne er værre end alle – dei

har lært aa snyte "túristar" og meg

reknar dei i lag med sleke folk: "han

har raad núk – han tenar penge alt

fyr lett" o.s.b. (og so kjæme dei og

"forlanger" sine 5 krone fyre eit lass

endaa dei ataat har havt lasste ein

annen og so har slængt ein tvo tre

bord úppaa aat meg; – igaar kom her

ein mann og {...} kravde be-

taling fyre 4 las – og eg betalde – so

trefte eg ein man, som búdde nær at

med dar, eg byggje – nei han hadde

nett kjaúrt eit las múrstein og knapt

núk dat; han var so skamlaúse, at

han endaa te gav meg tal paa, kor mykkjen

II

kor mykkjen stein han hadde kjaúrt –

"600 stein", sa han – Engel stod aa

haúre paa – ho er meire mistrúen

eld eg og vilde inkje, eg skúlde betale

karen <ut> för eg var sikker paa, at dar

var so mykkje stein upkjaurt – "trúr dú eg staar

her aa lyge daa", sa han. Eg kúnde daa

inkje trú anna, han sa <sannt>, og so

betalde eg hono fyre 600 stein, endaa

han verkeleg berre havde kjaúrt 140.

Slik er dat og med mannen, som

eg bygge paa, – han var so <venelskjen>,

daa han baúd meg grúnn aa bygge

paa; – eg betalar 10 kr. aaret og har

brúksret te 1,50 m. rondt húset; –

onde bygnaden synte dat ség, at eg

laút trækkje húset úmlag 30 cm.

útom maalet paa eine leda; men endaa skúlde eg

daa have brúksret paa 1,20 m. – men

daa skapte mannen seg reint galen

og meinte, at eg drog snart út yve

heile böen hás – endaa han hadde

fleire hondré maal jord – og dar eg sat

var dat mest ódrykat mark. So hadde

eg i leigekontrakta tinga meg ret te

aa hava tomt úti vatnet úm eg

vilde byggje noke dar – (eg bygde bryggje

(ein "molo"-paalag) – uti vatnet te aa have

"attelie" staaande paa). Sia aaukte

han paa ditte löive og so tok han

te aa byggje aa múre út i vatnet

at med meg fyr aa stængje meg fraa

aa komme vidare. Slek er dei störste

delen af folkje her – bedragara mest

alle – dei veit eg kvie meg fyre aa

take sak, og daa gjeld dat aa gaa meg

so nær, som raad er – darso eg er

skuldig dei eitkvart fyre ved ellde annat

eitkvart krev dei gjenne dúbbel beta-

ling af meg – dei er om seg og gnege

værre elde myse – ein og annan

bra mand finnst her núk iblandt,

og dei er ofte reint gjilde kara. (Berg)

Ja no har eg arga meg <slik> paa

disse kropparne, her er eg er skuldig

so mykkje paa disse husgreidarne,

at eg er lei at af heile skjiten –

eg skal "assúrere" og so – gúd gjæve

dat vilde brænne godt.)

Ja dat skulde være gjildt aa træffe

deg i byn. Eg reise in med lidt yve nytaar,

ein noke vinne, eg lyte vel fyre "kamerat-

skaps" skúld teikne meg dar og.

Har dú raakad paa Krantz ellde

Avang, sia Dei kom heimatte te byen?

Aavang hadde troffe ein jölstring og

"spanderet" paa hono og fortald hono,

at eg hadde lasta hono so "úvörleg".

Ja so maa dú leve vel og god jol,

eg vonar dei har noke på tynna

i Sogn – darso dú reise dit.

Eg er sjuk so eg faar vist aldrig smake

heimebryg meire – eg taale dat inkje.

Lev daa vel –

                        Din ven

Astrup

Oversettelse

Dear Thúnold!

It pained me to read

in your letter that you should

be subjected to so much

unpleasantness – there in Nordfjord. – It

was almost as if I felt

partly to blame myself – that

miserable picture, that should

lead to so much nastiness – I would

have never thought that you

least of all should be rejected – what

the devil kind of [art]work do they

want – (wasn’t [your rendition of] that <pathetic creature>

of theirs – that "Jesus" – majestic

enough – or was he not "sweet"

enough – let me tell you I know all about these "sweet

Jesus folk" – you won’t find {...} any

worse.) I was the victim of a

"Christian" youth organisation once, so I

know a little about how they are. At first

they did not find my work

good enough, so I had to pay for the silk

cloth and all of the "trimmings", the ropes, and tassels

and so on, – they could not

use the cloth, when I had

"tainted it" with my paint,

well I immediately offered them money –

no they would not even take the money

right away (– it was worth 60 kroner –) before they

had <held> a meeting. 8 days later

I heard that they had paid a visit

to my neighbours and talked behind my back

saying that they were forced to take legal action

against me, because I was planning

to "swindle" <them> – and then a few days

later I received threats of both one kind

and another if I did not send them the

money for the cloth this very instant.

I sent the money the same day threating the

same things, if they did not immediately

send me "the receipt", stating

that we were <even>, I used their very own

words – but then there were complaints against

me, saying that I had been "offensive" towards

<them>, that it was "<contemptible>". And then what

do you think they did, – well they travelled to the studio of

another painter and made a drawing for

him, depicting how they wanted the banner to look – precisely

the same, as what I had painted back home,

the same motif – the same colours and the same

"motto", that I had wanted to give <them>.

And so they had a banner painted that was as

similar to mine, as it could be, without

the painter having seen my

work. You mention the peasant culture – I

have seen very little of anything like that

here in these parts – "a feudal culture"

is a better name for it – "money profit"

"errand boy culture" and "deceitfulness" is what

you mostly find here – I have over 1000 – one thousand

kroner that is owed me in the villages, which

I will never see a farthing of – I

have experienced this lately – I

built a little house – the workmen

do nothing, when I am not watching

– they are accustomed to habits from government road

construction work, where it is a question of shirking

the work as best they can

and the transport drivers are the worst among them – they

have learned to cheat "the tourists" and they

consider me to be among this group: "he

can afford it – he earns money far

too easily", etc. (and then they come and

"demand" their 5 kroner for a load

even though they have transported a load for

someone else and then dumped two or three

planks up at my place; – yesterday a

man came here and {…} demanded pay-

ment for 4 truckloads – and I paid him – then

I met a man, who lived nearby

where I am building – well he had

just delivered one load of bricks and

scarcely that; he was so shameless that

he even told me the number of

II

bricks he had transported –

"600 bricks", he said – Engel stood

listening – she is more mistrustful

than I and did not want me to pay

the man <off> before I was certain that

all the bricks had been delivered up there – "do you think I

stand here lying to you", he said. I could

hardly believe then that he was not telling the <truth>, and so

I paid him for 600 bricks, even though

he had in fact only delivered 140.

Such is also the case with the man, whose land

I am building on, – he was so <amiable>,

when he offered me a plot of land to build

on; – I pay 10 kroner annually and have

the right of use of 1.50 m surrounding the house; –

during construction it turned out that I

had built the house about 30 cm

beyond the [agreed] measurement on one side; yet I should still

have had the right to 1.20 m – but

the man behaved quite insanely

and said that I would soon spread out over

his entire field – despite the fact that he had

more than a hundred acres of property – and where I was situated

it was mostly uncultivated land. And in my

rental contract I had registered the right

to have the plot extend beyond the shoreline in case I

wished to build something there – (I built a pier

– a kind of platform) – out over the water for

"a studio" to stand on). After that he increased

the amount of this agreement and then he began

to build a wall that extended into the water

right next to me in order to hinder me from

continuing. That is how most

of the people are here – swindlers the

lot of them – they know that I am reluctant to

take legal action, and then it is a question of pushing me

as far as they possibly can – if I owe them

anything for timber or something else

something they often demand double pay-

ment from me – they are calculating and niggling

worse than mice – one or two

good men can be found here no doubt,

and they are often absolutely fine fellows. (Berg)

Well now I have become <so> exasperated with

these people, I have so many

debts here because of all these building problems,

that I am fed up with the whole mess –

I have a mind to "insure it" and then – God pray

that it will burn well.)

Well it would be great to see

you in the city. I will travel there with just over New Year,

and stay only a few days – I

must go to Kristiania [Oslo] – the "young" paint-

ers have leased premises of their own and

want me to join them – it will be run like a

"joint-stock company" – no one can buy

shares other than the painters, and only those who

have a share, can exhibit – each

share costs 100 kroner, – I think that

is a lot; but a good venue is expensive in Kristi-

ania – and one must venture something, in order

to gain something, I will probably have to join

in for the sake of "friendship".

Have you encountered Krantz or

Avang, since they returned to the city?

Aavang had met a local man from Jölster and

"offered him a drink" and told him

that I had treated him "disrespectfully".

May you live well and Merry Christmas,

I expect you have something in a barrel

[waiting for you] in Sogn – if you are going there.

I am ill and I will probably never taste

homebrew again – My health does not allow it.

Live well then –

                            Your friend

Astrup
