Kjære Kramer!

Tak for dit brev – Jo, vi faar eftergive den

frùen de Kr. 50; – hùn faar jo da 150 – kr. i afslag

paa to tryk – hùn fik igrùnden et altfor godt

stort mindre end 14 dage.

2

fik saaledes tilfældigvis to slags nùmmere paa

mine brilleglas.

to tilfældige brilleglas, – sligt giver jo ikke tiltro.

at hùn ingen konfirmations present havde faaet

frk. Haavardsholm vilde vel helst have rent "sort

hvidt", bör man heller brùke lithografiet, thi

sansede farve i maleriet). –––

let sùrt öl, og hos handlesmændene her ligger

5

at ùndgaa at faa öllet sùrt; thi gjæringen kan

da foregaa saa hùrtigt, at eddik-bakterierne

(som findes i all pressgjær) ikke faar tid at

for 150 – kr.

dù hilse alle dine fra os alle her

Oversettelse

Sandalstrand 24th November 1925

Dear Kramer!

Thank your for your letter – Well, we can agree to give

the lady the kr. 50 rebate; – she will thus get a 150 – kr. reduction

for two prints – she actually got a much too good

“marigold picture”, – I cannot print one like it in

much less than a fortnight. Now I have despite suffering

continuous torments from asthma and bronchitis finally

completed a muted “Milling season”, – it is dismal to a

fault, – new elements have been added to remedy the

“desolation” a bit, – it has cost me a great deal of effort, and if

T. does not wish to have it now, it is unlikely there will be

any other buyer, – well it’s hard to

tell; : Engel thinks it is better than my other ones

and yet it lacks autumn’s “hectic” greens and

reds, – I have had to strive to add more rain

and moisture. ––– Thanks for the information – the postcard – about

the glasses – very strange, that one should have

to be “present” just to try some “frames”

of a specific construction – I will have to approach

a different company about the matter. –

2

These ophthalmologists I have no trust in whatsoever, –

I had nearly told Kreyberg this, when I was in Bergen,

but was reluctant to engage in gossip; – but between

you and me, – I can tell you, that when I had to go

to Bergen for the sake of my eyes that time, I had just broken

a lens in my eyeglasses and had to dig up some

old ones, that I had used 10 years before or

more, and they were weaker than the ones I used, – I

therefore by coincidence ended up with two different strengths

in my lenses. – When Malling had finished examining

my eyes wrote and looking at my glasses; he proceeded to

write out a prescription exactly the same as these

two haphazard eyeglass lenses, – such incidences do not induce trust.

In the meantime this company in Bergen has my dubious

prescription from Malling and the company should at least

either send the prescription in return or in any case get

in touch with me. – –

What you wrote about Holm and the gold chain interested

Kari greatly, – the letter was unfortunately; like all of your

cherished letters; read aloud to the family, – I should not

have done so this time, – because Kari immediately hit upon the fact,

that she had not received any Confirmation gift

from us her parents; – of course I will print a

3

“black and white” [woodcut] of “Sandalstrand”, – but it is

too little – I think; – furthermore it is unfair

towards Hjördis, who was offered the chain first. –

I have a print, which I think is good of “Sandal-

strand, – but it is in “black–2–3 grey and white”, and

Miss Haavardsholm would prefer to have a plain “black

and white” one, – which Krantz spoke so much about. (In my opinion

the woodcut’s advantage is to able to use “colour tones”, – that

is the distinctive quality of the woodcut; compared to other types of graphic art if someone merely wants “plain” black

and white”, then one should rather employ lithography, because

if one works over time with woodcuts in only

“plain” “black and white”, one can easily fall into

mannerism – like the Swedes – (Art Nouveau à là Cubism) –

or one falls back on the monotonous Xylography,

which is perhaps coming into fashion now, like so many

mistakes from the past – like the perceived brown

colour in painting for example). –––

I will attempt to make one in “plain” “black and white” in

the same size as the new Sandalstrand, but that would

require new blocks, – and that will probably take too long

for Christmas, – but perhaps there is something else, Miss

Haavardsholm would like “besides” the old

“Sandalstrand”, (in black and white or colour) ? –––

4

In the meantime, I thank you very much for the offer to

exchange – between woodcut and necklace, – but isn’t that

unfair towards Hjördis?

Well here I am bothering you again: first of all it pertains to

your prints of “Salome” and “Marigold night” – the first

for Kreyberg’s print – the second to either print over again

or make a new one for you, – one should be able to pack them to-

gether and send them by post. –––

Well and then there is a more serious matter: – in order to be free of

this bronchitis, – which is almost worse than the asthma, –

I have made a little malt – and planned to brew

a little for Christmas, – the malt will be really nice, but the yeast

presents more of a problem, – this compressed yeast tends

to makes sour beer, and at the grocers’ here it is often

kept in storage for too long – often up to a fortnight; – I

remember that you obtained yeast for me from Hansa, – it

was evidently way too fine, – I could manage very

well with a much more common yeast – “used bock beer yeast

would do quite nicely, – but it is difficult

to obtain yeast from Hansa, might I dare ask you

to purchase 2–3 kg. compressed yeast – fresh from the fac-

tory and send it 8 days before Christmas, – you think it is

a large quantity 2–3 kg., but it’s the only way

5

of preventing the beer from becoming sour; because the fermentation can

then occur so quickly, that the vinegar bacteria

(which is found in all compressed yeast) does not have time to

have much effect; – (afterwards they can of course have effect, – but

if the beer is immediately moved to a cold cellar,

then the vinegar bacteria cannot have any great effect –

not even later.) – Well if you can get hold of bock beer yeast, it

would be best, – but I was made to understand, that Hansa

is reluctant to give away yeast, – and compressed yeast is sufficient,

as mentioned, if only one uses abundant quantities,

so that everything occurs so quickly, that one fools the vinegar

bacteria, – and the compressed yeast is much easier to send; whether

one sends it by post or steamboat, – in the latter

case one must address it to Björseth, since the motorcar does not arrive

any further on this side; – if it is convenient to purchase a large

bag of yeast weighing 5 kg. or more, it would be fine, since

there are many here who would like to have yeast for Christmas baking.

I have now made “Willow goblin in colour” “muted” – but I

fear it is not sufficiently muted for T. – I will have

to send some woodcuts one of these days, – it takes

so long for me to print now, I am ill, – so

it’s probably best, I send things gradually, – as I finish

them, – if there won’t be so many. Today I received

a letter from Miss Voss in Kristiania, – she would like to have a painting

for 150 – kr. , – I get a lot of requests like this every

year, – I generally do not reply to them regrettably, – when

return postage is not included, – but I probably should.

Dr. Bydal has asked me, whether I will sell him “summer night

by the garden fence ” – (the boy and the girl on either side of the

fence), – I have asked for Kr. 1500, – “a sale to a friend " and he has not

responded – probably thinks it is too expensive, – It also requires

a little more work to finish it completely, – something

that I am reluctant to do, as I am afraid of ruining

it, – it is one of my studies, that I myself am fond of.

I have now installed a stove in the studio, but have still not moved

up there, – it has to be sealed a bit with moulding, etc. – Kari spins

there with great persistence these days in preparation for, when she

will begin to weave; – we have a very nice and capable house-

maid, – so things are looking brighter, – if only this

debt were not so oppressive, – I have paid a little here and

there, but new ones are constantly turning up. Next autumn

I will start an art school in Förde – have already signed up

a dozen pupils – among them Mrs. Bydal and the pharmacist,

and an engineer Skaar and a wholesaler from Florö – as long as I

can secure a model in the meantime. – Well you must

say hello to your family from all of us here

Your Astrup

Speaking of E. Werenskiold: He has always “kept up with”

drawing nudes – and has painted many excellent nudes earlier as well
