Summer Night at the Old and New Parsonage at Jølster (study)

There are no known descriptions or photographs of this painting, but Astrup’s title indicates that it depicts the old and new parsonage buildings at Ålhus in Jølster on a summer night. The painting must therefore have been painted after the new parsonage was built in 1904.

The painting is, according to Astrup’s list from 1927, a study for a painting with the same title, “Summer Night at the Old and New Parsonage at Jølster” (U017). The completed painting, which is also one of the unknown pieces in Astrup’s body of work, was on sale at Astrup’s exhibition at Bergens kunstforening (art society) in 1908. It is therefore reasonable to believe that the study was created between 1904 and 1908, but beyond that its history is unknown.
