The sketch was bought for 5 Norwegian kroner by the artist Thorolf Holmboe (1866–1936) at Astrup’s solo exhibition at Blomqvist in 1905. That year the work was titled “Sketch” in the sales receipt, but in 1908, when Holmboe loaned the work to Astrup’s exhibition at the Bergens kunstforening art society, it had the title “Springtime Evening”. Astrup included it as work number 54 on his list in 1927, with Holmboe as the owner. The subsequent provenance of the work is unknown.
