The Artist's Notes

At the same time I painted another study, which I planned to use for the same motif, it has not been exhibited yet

Astrup, Nikolai to Aslaksen, Edvard Waldemar, 1908-10-10. Nasjonalbiblioteket, Brevs.295-331567. p. 9.

but the mystique and the pagan atmos- phere of the figures around the fire are perhaps even stronger here than in the Midsummer Eve picture

Astrup, Nikolai to Aslaksen, Edvard Waldemar, 1908-10-10. Nasjonalbiblioteket, Brevs.295-331567. p. 10.

the study, that I have of a Midsummer Eve bonfire, may perhaps be considered a picture – but this one I want You to have as a gift, and it will be shipped to You, as soon as I am well enough

Astrup, Nikolai to Aslaksen, Edvard Waldemar, 1908-11. Nasjonalbiblioteket, Brevs.295-331568. p. 2.
