      Kjære Kramer! (1

her i Madrid, tænkte jeg straks paa dig

man blir nemlig altid snydt

over at komme væk fra Spanien – da her

francens værdi i Alger (28–29 öre) omtrent 800 Kr.

      Dear Kramer! (1

When I saw these stamps in a window

here in Madrid, I immediately thought of you

and little Per. – We successfully crossed

the Mediterranean – to Spain Alicante, where we

met an amiable cousin – who took us

with him by motorcar to a summer resort by

the sea, where it was very picturesque

with hundreds of boats, that rocked

2) on the rolling waves; in A we sat

in a restaurant with large windows facing

the ocean and observed the strange light,

that appears here in the south at sundown – and espe -

cially a few minutes after, it is somewhat

the same, as the mysterious

pale light in the bright summer nights in Norway.

It was amusing to meet an amiable

cousin, – it has almost never happened to me before.

3) We drank quite a few bottles of bubbly

together, and we were not permitted to pay

anything, neither Per nor I; – and when

we parted quite animated in the early

morning hours, I fell asleep as usual

in a chair, until the time was approaching

for the train’s departure, – then

my cousin arrived and accompanied us to the Train

station and made sure that we were not swindled

excessively by the hotel and driver and porters,

one is always swindled here you see

5) ry good friends “No, the Spaniard

is too proud to admit anything

he also “carries out” his scheme more effectively

and disappears in the same instant, that he

succeeds in accomplishing it. Italians swindle open-

ly – Frenchmen count again and again and

repeatedly wrong (with a little plus in their favour – “every

little bit counts”) – but

the Spaniard sins so grossly and insidiously that

one never suspects anything until afterwards. He is

generous to an extreme: “Insists on giving you the best of everything”.

6) until the right occasion arrives. –

Well we leave tomorrow for Paris, – we are more

or less in good health, – I am afflicted by “twinges” which

never subside, so I <get little sleep>. Engel

is extremely <swollen> after a tooth extraction and

little Per Alger is always hungry and gets too little

from <mama> – it is not so <easy> to always keep

him dry while travelling either. We are happy

to get away from Spain – as it

is terribly expensive – more expensive than in Norway.

One does not get as much for 1 P.tas here as

[one gets]for 50 öre in Norway, – and for me one

7) Peseta costs nearly 1 kr. – (1 room costs for exam-

ple 355 Ptas per day – In Alicante we had 60 Ptas

each – Per and I – per day including meals) We got

2500 francs from Consùl Mohr – based on

the value of the franc in Algeria (28–29 öre) it was around 800 kr.

The interest from the grant – which he made such a great

fuss about this summer – was 400 kr. – I made

the stupid mistake of having all the remaining money

(from the grant) exchanged into English currency and from that to French currency – it

would have been better to exchange them into Norwegian

currency, because when the franc decreased in value some time later

I might have exchanged it little by little as we needed and mostly

when the value of the franc was low. Be well until we meet. Say hello

to Petra and to you and your family fondest wishes from your Astrup
