Kjære Kramer. Kramers håndskrift: Mott. 26/6 22

veivæsenet har ramponert hele veien – (her bygges

noget at tænke paa.

begyndt at bygge)? Illustrasjon Det saa noget

vælge i blant. Ja dù faar ùndskylde skriften og

hasten.

Her har været

sùrt og kaldt like til i dag (St. Hansaften). Her

i aar. – Her blir jo værre for aaret i dette land –

her er snart bare en maaned sommer. Vi har nù

været i bryllup.

Bedste hilsen til alle

Dear Kramer. Kramer's handwriting: Rec. 26/6 22

Thank you for your letter – I will try to send off

a reply in the same postal transport – it was nice to see you and forgive

me: – you were absolutely right that I was unduly busy

with other things and paid too little attention to you, – so there was

too little time to discuss serious matters; –

but I had spent the entire spring worrying – about

getting hold of workmen and organising everything – for the build-

ing – etc. The transport of sand is the worst, as

the public roads administration has wrecked the entire road – (they are building

a new 4 m. wide road here); – now they have taken my entire wall

and I am getting a mere pittance in compensation, – a good amount

of “crushed stone”, that I had made, they have also taken.

I have now arranged the delivery of money to

Nikolai Haùgen and received a temporary receipt; we must

get together soon to sign the deed, – but I would

like to have a “template” from you, – well I might very well execute

it according to all the legal requirements, –but thought it was best

you contributed a few words as well. – He reserved the

right to the mill dock (after conferring with you), and in that case you must be aware

that you have “habitation duties” (the latter may perhaps be an

advantage, if one wishes to stretch the boundary line further inland) –

I thought, that I should speak to the other landowners about the

outlying fields, but have not had the opportunity yet, – it

might be best for the time being to feel one’s way forward, – and if the response is

“no”, then one can always do as one wishes “in good faith”.

From Tùnold I have heard nothing about those Rio pic-

tures. I think it is best, that I keep out of

such matters, – there is too little time as well, – had one at least

got a trip to Rio for the bother, – then it might have been

something to think about. The length of each picture was

2 m.; – the width I heard nothing about, – but I

do not have canvas of that size, and it will take

time to make; – paints I have enough of, – I believe – but

the whole matter is so vague, – I am in a bad way finan-

cially and cannot get a loan from the bank until the end of

July, – so it might be tempting to try something like this, –

but time is short. I would then have to ask you to obtain

canvas for me from Sùndt, – then I would prepare it myself. –

“The Wharf” I hardly think Kreyberg will likeand even

II

less the new version of Farm(yard) in a Ravine, which Engel

told me, you would like to send to Kreyberg

This replica of the picture, I wished to paint

with a “broad” brush, and this I understand Kreyberg does not

very much like. Don’t you think he will prefer

the little picture with all of my buildings (before I had

begun to build)? Illustration It looked something

similar to this sketch with

“Nils-stova” in the foreground behind a blooming

cherry tree (quite little) and an apple tree in the foreground.

You don’t say, Kreyberg had changed his mind with

regard to the Growing season picture, – I believe he, like

so many others, is very influenced by the frame

and can hardly see a picture really well, before it

has been put in a frame; – this is how it is with most

people who do not paint themselves, – when it come to

painters it is often the reverse. –––

I am printing a few versions of “The Billy goat that went to heaven”

and a couple of others, so that you can have something to

choose from. Well you must pardon my handwriting and

haste. We have had a couple of visits by

a man named Sandal, who is an acquaintance of Kreyberg junior – he

is a machinist at Haùkeland hospital

In addition we have had visits by many of the vil-

lagers (in particular, because we have beer now, – it is incidentally

almost finished now). We are currently working on the

last corner of the cellar wall, which is now built

and would soon also be completely cemented, if only

we had “sand” – I am also in need of

more cement, but that will have to wait until later

when we cast the [concrete] floor, etc. It has been

raw and cold here up until today (Midsummer Eve). Here

nothing will come of what was sown in the beginning of

May, – not even the grain will ripen

this year. – It gets worse by the year in this country –

here there has been barely a month of summer. But we have at least

been at a wedding.

Best wishes to everyone
