Kjære Kramer

Tak for dit brev!

gjort paa 20–30 aar, – saa noget maa

næsten en fordel at bygselfolkene selv spekùlerer;

at gjöre, hvad de vil – med trær paa eiendommen;

i örene. – Pakteren har jeg faaet istand en

anmeldelse paa dyrplageri, – og jeg skal selv

optræde som vidne, – det gjælder at "holde

ham i aande". Han er begyndt at se paa mig

hvem han mùligens tænker at faa kjöbe hùsene,

for saaledes at kùnne faa eiendommen billigere

bleknede formelig af raseri bare ved tanken;

rik – (har to farme), – saa bygselfolkene mangler

IIII

at al vor færd i denne sak kan holdes hemmelig

saa længe som mùligt. –––

for vane at gjöre.

Ja saa nævner dù , at en Urdahl vil have korn-

Dear Kramer

Thank you for your letter! – today I want to “take up

the gold pen” and write a few lines. First I

must thank you profusely for the shirts – but you must

be so kind as to note them down in my large

debt ledger; – since I am nearly penniless again.

I look forward to trying on the shirts, once the warm

weather returns; for the time being it is cool and nearly

cold with a little welcome rain following the drought and

heat. – Well Engel is writing to your

wife to thank her for the errands – we are such a

bother to her, – well you as well – The anchovy

has been lost without a trace, – we have sent a messenger by motorcar every

day; – in Förde it is not to be found! – Fond has been down

there himself. – Well now I can inform you, that

I have won the big lawsuit, which for 3 years I

have been plagued with, – and you can believe, I am

bursting with exultation – and send sarcastic

letters to all my foes in the village, who have

joined in the “war”, – the case has now been in

the highest court and is thus over; – I wanted to hoist

the flag for the occasion; but was not allowed to by Engel,

who “could not believe, that I was so childish!”

Fond and “the guardian” were also thrilled on my

behalf, and I have received many congratulations on the occasion.

But the matter may have its aftermath, – one is

furious because one has lost, and I will suffer “retribution” for

slanderous remarks and accusations during

the controversy; – but it is not for nothing that I come

from an old quarrelsome solicitor’s family, – so I believe

they will draw the shortest straw in the end as well,–

I have won twice already. –––

And now to our large mutual investment, – well

unfortunately it is not going as well, as I would have

liked, – a new element has entered into the

matter: The cottars are suddenly acting like buy-

ers and have made an offer for the property, – admittedly

ours is still higher, – but there is a rich brother in Ameri-

ca, – he and his sister, who evidently cannot tolerate the cli-

mate in America, are making a trip here this year. –

– the departure has therefore been postponed – for those here at home, they may plan

to leave anyway, but the American sister will

perhaps remain here and purchase the property, – and then

they are hoping for the possible passing of the cottar’s

ruling by next year, so that they might purchase the proper-

ty at its appraisal value; and then it will hardly be as

expensive, as one in such appraisals always wants to help the one,

who occupies or has occupied the property “for 3

lifetimes”. In addition the American brother has dollars

II

to spare, – and the dollar has a high exchange rate, so that it pays

now to invest it in Norwegian land and property.

These are things I have found out by talking

to people, who have spoken with the cottars; –

“the guardian” has been so busy with building,

a Christening, and his large cumbersome farm, that I have

not been able to bother him with reconnoitring; –

but there are signs, which indicate, that this is unfortunately

correct – because the cottars have begun to

turn the soil” – something they evidently have not

done in 20–30 years, – so something must

be “brewing”. – The landowner is just as un-

sure as I am, – he only knows, that the cottars

have begun to negotiate with him to

purchase the property, – but he thought, that it

was, so that they themselves that might be able to sell it again and thus

get a good price for their buildings and rights, – and then

it might be understandable, when they begin to turn the soil

and wish to improve the property, – something which otherwise

is difficult to understand that they might have any interest

in doing. For the moment there is no danger of the prop-

erty slipping out of our hands; it is

almost an advantage that the cottars themselves are investing;

because then one is assured, that they do not destroy

anything: – trees and such before they leave, and they may

also keep an eye on “the tenant”, so that he does

not do anything of the kind either, – his boys had begun to

peel the bark off some of the trees in the island – (they are allowed

to do as they wish – with the trees on the property;

but they have no right to be in the island); I alerted

the landowner about it, and I believe he is keeping them

in check. – I have made a complaint against the tenant

for animal abuse, – and I will

appear as a witness myself, – it is best to “keep

his guard up”. He has begun to look at me

with the scared stealthy eyes of a pig, – he probably knows,

that he has a mortal enemy in me. –

Your “pro forma” written notice I cannot

use except in an emergency; because if I should

show such a document to the landowner, he would immediately

raise the price to around 9–10,000 the way you write, – we

will wait with that until the “American brother” arrives, and

then we will see, if he makes a bid that approaches our offer. –

We do have pre-emption rights up to and including 8.500. – we must

of course count on approx. 500 more than others,

since we will get the island as well, – which no one else will.

The landowner’s neighbour, who is also the neighbour of “our” property

is probably also an investor, – it would be extremely

convenient for him to expand his property

from a small to a large smallholding – and he has

III

more than enough money since he has “traded” on “a large scale” in

butter now during the rationing, just as he made

large purchases of hides and wool just before “the hike in price”.

But he has already been careless, since he

has conferred with the cottars repeatedly (from

whom he may be thinking of purchasing the buildings,

in order to be able to purchase the property more cheaply

afterwards); – this is merely a “presumption” of mine,

but I have “insinuated it” to the landowner and he

actually turned pale with rage at the mere idea;

so I have practically eliminated that neighbour,

as a competitor, – admittedly he has some

pretty daughters, whom the landowner’s brothers are said to

be considering, and an alliance there might be

dangerous for us – and but such matters are not resolved so

quickly. Nor do I think that the American

brother plans to purchase for himself, since he

has a large farm in America, but it’s possible,

he wants to buy for his sister (my “old girlfriend”).

Another sister in America is supposedly also very

rich – (has two farms), – so the cottars are not short

of money, – but they are also people, who “count” their

shillings, – and if it becomes known, I will wave your

“fabricated letter” in the face of the landowner, – we

won’t therefore need to consider it as “an offer”,–

I can just say, that as far as Kramer

I am not willing to go. As for the landowner’s brother,

I have done nothing about the matter, – it is as

mentioned before the only thing, that I hesitate to interfere

with, – and an alliance with him might protect us

from being “contested”. – The landowner does

not dare to agree to compensate us for an eventual

loss in the event the sale is “contested”, – since he cannot guaran-

tee, what his brother might do, – furthermore

his own father is also listed as an investor,

but the landowner will not allow him for any

price to have the property, – (they are practically enemies) –

but he might consider “contesting” – the old man.

And should one of the other sons become part-

ners with the father, it might become a bothersome matter

for us to be “contested” and perhaps lose money.

It may not be so much, since the appraised value – (allodial-

value) has recently become rather high. –

But I doubt if my friend (and brother of the landowner)

will agree to only to receiving a tract that “reached

neither the country road nor the lake”, – but I

will suggest it, – he may perhaps come here to

his brother’s christening celebration. – The landowner has

got twins, – and then I will feel my way forward –

or have the landowner do so, – it is best

IIII

that all our movements in this matter are kept secret

as long as possible. –––

Engel is better now, but not strong, – thank you for

you and your wife’s concern, but it had no

significance, that your wife sat on Engel’s lap, – it was stupid

of me to mention the motorcar trip in connection with Engel’s –

– well what shall I call it: – “delivery”. i did not

even remember, that Engel held Aagot on

her lap, – and you can both rest assured that it

was not the cause, but Engel believed, that it

might be have resulted from, the fact that she sawed wood in Förde for Kirsten

and struck her stomach with the saw as women have

the habit of doing. Likewise from the motorcar trip up again which

went at an incredibly fast speed – only one hour, – and

the cause can be traced in particular, to when Engel carried the

heavy and unwieldy washing machine tub full of

water a few days before the event.

Thank you for your good advice about the “mute” – it is probably

required, – but such “mutes” are not to

be found here, – could you obtain one such for me, – I

remember a certain Graarùd in Bergen in the old days, – but now

I don’t know either the address or the name (since the fire in Bergen).

Well now I’m being ill mannered to trouble you, you are probably thinking,

therefore you must only give me the address of a man, who

trades in such, and I will take care of the rest myself.

Well you mention, that a certain Urdahl would like to have the grain

poles picture (the large one), – but I just received

at the same time a letter from Meyer, who also demands it, – he has

never received a promise to have it, but has written

several times asking for “Sandal mountain”, as

he calls it, – in the meantime I think, that it is

so incomplete, that I cannot sell it to anyone,

and I would prefer to look at it again on an autumn day or

2, and if I can make it better than it is now, Urdahl shall have

it – I have no obligations towards Meyer – admit-

tedly he had just sold one of my pictures

to Joh. Ludv. Movinckel with a 200 kr. profit and

will send me these 200, (when he receives the picture presumably)

He wants to have both the “rhubarb picture”, which he was

promised at one time, but which he did not take (as you remember,

he bought it from me that autumn, you were here, but

had changed his mind and wanted to have it for one

of his friends, which is why I did not send it), – I have

also painted quite a lot on it since then.

And then he wants to have “The Interior” – and that he will

have to pay well for, – I have considered 3000, – do you

think I am brazen? I am not well these days and have

had a couple of seizures again – accompanied Kaland to Vasenden

and rowed excessively perhaps. Kaland was very “gracious”

this time – talked quite engagingly about Krantz and his

intrigues against me; – but I’m sure he understood, that I was cool towards

him. He was very enthusiastic about my “left leaning” and

thought I was headed towards a new “heyday”. Well then may you

and your family live well! With Best wishes your devoted Astrup
