Spring in Jølster
Oil on canvas, 1899 - 1911
Unknown owner
There are no known descriptions or photographs of this painting, but the title indicates that the subject is a landscape in Jølster in springtime.
In 1961, the engineer Olav Selvaag (1912–2002) loaned this Astrup painting to the exhibition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Kunstnerforbundet (artists’ association). The concept was to display two pictures by each artist, one from their early period and one from their late period. Astrup was represented by the paintings “Spring in Jølster” and The White Horse in Spring (K119). Based on the concept for the exhibition, it is reasonable to believe that “Spring in Jølster” is an early work.
It is not known when or how this painting came into the possession of Selvaag, and there is no known relationship between the Selvaag and Astrup families. The history of the work before and after 1961 is therefore unknown.
